MBTA Interactive Intervention

Spring 2023 // Design: Processes & Practices

The MBTA Interactive Intervention serves as a navigating tool for those concerned with the capacity of Boston public transportation. The app publishes real-time and technologically supported train capacity data. To differentiate between train cars, shape emblems are painted on the loading track and the train cars.

Overview

01

Problem Definition

To develop a specific solution to the general task, "Improve the MBTA experience," I expanded upon train capacity in a Duncker Diagram. Ultimately, I combined the two specific solutions into cooperative MBTA in-train pressure technology and an app that would publish the capacity data.

02

Audience

While all MBTA passengers would benefit from train capacity information, my MBTA Interactive Intervention app also improves safety of children and individuals with spatial anxiety

03

App Design & Prototype

I developed an app prototype in Figma. The prototype simulates the interactive experience within the public transportation tool. A user indicates their destination and train options based on car capacity.

04

Mockup

To physically implement the project concept, I prepared mockups in Adobe Illustrator. The trains and station tracks are labeled by number and shape to quickly identify train cars as the train pulls into the station. The numbers and shapes match those in the app.
